RE: Do you like your in-laws' cooking?
My husbands mom is a very good cook. But, we have never been invited to a meal at her house. It makes me sad, because she cooks up some ethnic dishes that are my husbands childhood favorites, and I don't have the recipes nor has she ever prepared them for him as an adult.
I doubt any of our mil's are actually bad cooks, they just cook differently than we do.

Yuck. Has anyone ever had macaroni and spam salad with MSG? Yea, that's what I said. I didn't even know it was legal to buy MSG.

HMMM! Thats man food there. My husbands favorite college food was "Cheesey Span Chunks"- his own concoction of fried spam chunks in mac & cheese.
Not chic food though, definitely.

Orange colored or flavored? Orange flavored sounds kinda interesting- like with orange zest in it? But orange colored and shaped like texas animals seems kinda... weird.
I knew an old lady who put vienna sausages in her meat loaf. Groddy!

My FMIL tries to cook, but Sean says my cooking is better than her's. I've made spagetti, pot roast, hamburgers, pork chops, and tons of other stuff for him and he says it's all been better than her cooking. :) Last time we were there, she made us fried chicken and it was so dry I couldn't stand it. I didn't tell her, though.
I would like to make meatballs for them sometime. It's my mom's recipe of ketchup or A1 in grape jelly and letting them melt together. Then, slow-cook meatballs for a few hours in a crock pot in the mixture. It's really good. Sean tried it when my mom made it for a party and he's wanted me to make it ever since. LOL. His mom doesn't have any recipes like that. It makes me feel special knowing that I'm better than her in many things.
..same here, i always get comments on my cooking, i love to cook and i especially love to cook for people i love .
mil doesnt put any effort into her cooking (queen of bland overly dry chicken) , and it bothers her soo much that they stop eating at our house when they visit, like dh says " you can only insult that woman soo many times", they drive 2.5 hrs to see us and then order a pizza as soon as they arrive and it is always MIL idea, although FIL does like to experiment w/ new food, fancy restaurants (in other words have food that taste like something- something he doesnt eat at home ;) and that i dont mind too much.(actually there are 3 occasions they were over for one of my bbqs and FIL commented AHHH I THINK I DIED AND WENT TO HEAVEN) for the most part though, i kinda just stop making the effort everytime, HOWEVER if i know that they r coming by and ESPECIALLY if some other ppl are coming by (like greatgrandmother or BIL or even crazy SIL) i will happily make a meal du jour that kicks IL butt ..there is nothing like seeing MIL and SIL scowl as DH says "thanks for the great food again honey - I love you" while savoring the fruits of my labour, YUM !

When MIL was here, I knew she wouldn't eat any of my food (as was witnessed by the fact she didn't try any of the sweets I had made), so instead of trying to make a meal for them, we just went out to restaurants for dinner each night. That saved me from slaving over a stove only to have her stick her nose up at my food and not eat it, claiming to be "on a diet" (although she seemed perfectly able to eat at restaurants). In this way, I didn't give her the satisfaction of cooking and having her snub the food.

I think my FMIL is a good cook - so far, I've enjoyed everything she has cooked/baked; BUT, I'd rather eat out or order in... because when she cooks, it's all drama... She tells us to get out of her way, get out of her kitchen then often complains throughout the entire meal about how "no one helps her" and how she "slaves in the kitchen for everyone with no appreciation"...... Then, we all do the cleaning (while she micromanages)...
It's annoying...

I've had to seriously "dumb down" my cooking. My first wedded Christmas, I made tiramisu with homemade lady finger cookies and everything. No one touched it. It *scared* them. Once I made creme brulee- the same thing!!! So now I just doctor cake mix cakes and brownies. They love that!!!
I suppose if they were on a board for "tortured inlaws" they would be posting about the snobby food I make. Hee, hee. I just like trying gourmet things, and I love sweets. Thank goodness DH does too, or I would weigh 300 pounds eating it by myself!

Orange flavored meatloaf in the shape of an armadillo....yes, I can beat that, but that made me LOL!!!!
How about lard sandwiches? FIL's favorite! Yes, you see you cook up bacon with your eggs in the morning and then you let the grease harden in the pan. Then at lunch you make some toast, cut out a square of lard from the pan and make a sandwich. Serve with a cup of your favorite gravy for dipping.
Can you say "heart attack"?
Just when you think you have seen them at their worst you realize that once again, you are wrong.
