RE: Have you ever
I made MIL mad with something like this once.
Before I took any real interest in cooking MIL showed me how to make lasagna. Hers was ok, much better than I could do at the time. And we were getting along good at the time, she was all proud that she taught me to make it just like hers.
A couple years went by, in that time I learned to cook and one day she and her BF were at our house and I didn't have anything else that would feed that many people so I made lasagna.
Her BF ate 3 plates of it and wouldn't shut up about it, I don't think he meant to offend her but he was saying stuff like "oh this is soooooo good, what did you put in this? tell her what you put in this so she can make it this way"
LOL she was boiling. She hated it. MIL doesn't have that much going for her, with her horrible personality and all that so her medi-ocre cooking is one of her stronger points. I thought it was pretty funny though.

ha ha, serves MIL right. Good for you making it your own dish anyhow, a lot of people have it as their signature dish!

RE: Have you ever
its so strange how some people can get so jelouse of the craziest things. When Dh and i first got married DH mentioned that he loves mashed taters and MIL asked if i made them with real or from the box i told her real and she said "well, you know her prefers them instant right?" later on i asked DH and he said that when he was younger that was all that was in so that was what he would eat but he likes mine much better and that he never wants to see a box of instant mashed potatos in our house!
you never know which direction SHE is coming from so keep up your defence!

RE: Have you ever
This is an old post but I wanted to bring it up again.... I will never forget my first taste of boiled onions my MIL made and I had to choke down. (sorry mainegirl, I know its an east coast thing).
My DH just called me and told me that I needed to remind him that he had a list (hmm, why did she give the list to him. He wont cook) that his mother gave him of all the food she was bringing to Thanksgiving. And then I get to plan around it. I am definately not planning around it but instead Im bringing out the WEST COAST in me and cooking west coast food. That turkey she stored in my freezer is going into tamales baby. Teach her to be racial towards me because Im not from New England.(read my tick me off story) Hell, Might even make it a buffet. grab and go baby. True redneck fashion. Maybe a redneck burn barrel barbecue.( yes I have barbecued over a burn barrel before at cattle roundups.)
ANYWAYS, I cant wait to see the list. She allready told me that she was making mashed turnips.
My kids never ate turnips, (its a west coast thing) Soooo I hid some in my pot roast the other night to see how the kids would respond. We invited MIL over. My oldest DD (16 and knows better) thot it was a potato, took a bite, made a face and spat it out into her plate and started a drama thing right at the table. She made a big deal of how she tried to feed the dog the turnip and the garbage gut that eats anything wouldnt even eat it. The other DD (15) daintily took a tiny taste bite, swallowed and asked her father if he would like the rest of her turnips. I made sure I didnt catch any eye contact with MIL. She made the comment that if you mix the silly things with parsnips they are quite good....
HAHAH you quessed it both my girls say. Whats a parsnip?
Its kinda fun watching my children, now almost grown, giving my MIL some comupperance.

RE: Have you ever
Lets see desert for Christmas last year at MIL's was, lime green jello with veggies suspended in it! Carrots, celery and lettus. It looked scary! DH refused to try it and I took a spoonful to be polite. MIL said it was a Victorian Recipe. Somehow I don't see myself asking for any recipe's in the near future. lol Allthough she does make very good pie's.
The one and only time I cooked for her I made penne ala vodka which I make very well, home made bread with salad and chicken parm. incase she didn't like the penna ala vodka. She had never even heard of it before! She ate all of it and overate (a lot!) then moaned and whined for constantly for 3 hours about how I cannot cook and poisioned her. I have always been asked to help cook for parties and events and have hosted parties for over 70 people with rave reviews of my food. However, MIL will tell me at any given opportunity how I cannot cook lol.
The last time she said that, I said to DH maybe I should start cooking like your mom since I can't cook. Playfull he said he'd shoot himself if I cooked like her lol. DH loves my cooking.

RE: Have you ever
Since there's not a lot of veggies, how about a greenbean caserole? Everyone loves that! - you know, greenbeans, a can of concentrated cream of mushroom soup (or cream of chicken soup, which I prefer), and those French's friend onions topping. It's very easy and everyone loves it. You can just sprinkle the onions around the very edge and supply a small bowl of them so that people can decide how much/little they want. Bake it all up and yummmmmm! A nice cut raw veggie plate (carrots, cukes, cherry tomatoes, broccoli, etc) with a ranch dip never fails, either.
p.s. I like onions only when they are in a stew or possibly in a boiled dinner, but I am not a fan of just a big ol' boiled onion. It probably is an east coast thing, but I certainly would choke down a big boiled onion, too! Ewwww!

RE: Have you ever
I cant believe that after the fiasco of my turnips with the kids that she would even bother cooking something they wont like.
