I can't discipline my child

A little intro before my post. I live with the in-laws. It is so unfortunate that in this part of the world where I live, it is a obligatory to live with the in laws if your DH is the only son. My hubby is the only son in this country and that leaves me no choice but to live with the in laws since the day we got married in 1995. Everything was perfect until my first newborn in 2003. My MIL started to show her true colours...

Last night, I blew my top when my MIL reprimanded for disciplining my DD. It happened after my hubby and I had finished watching a 1.5 hours DVD movie "Le Divorce".

I was in my room when I heard my MIL scolding my DD for spilling water onto the floor. My DD was doing painting in her room when she spilled the water. But the words used on my DD were beyond her understanding and it is very obvious that my MIL were hinting those words on me - "can't you be initiative enough? I am already so tired and I still have to mop the spill?". My MIL used the "not initiative enough" word at least 3 times and she said it loud enough for me to hear. It is so obvious that those words were meant for me.

I brought my child into my room, closed the door and questioned her about the spill. Of course, I reprimanded my child to be more careful about not spilling the water. My MIL stood outside my room and starting raising her voice, saying that I should not reprimand her. I was furious and probably the last straw that broke my back. I opened the door and confronted her, that it is my right to be doing what a mother should do. My MIL continued to nag and hurling all sorts of insults at me. I started shouting back at us - saying words such as "I have tolerated you for so long, I have tried to put up with you, if you can discipline your child why can't I?"

I also told her that I already have enough stress from being a full-time WOHM, studying night classes and taking care of my DD. Guess what the MIL said to me?

MIL said "I also have alot of stress being a full-time home-maker and you get paid for working." I was so pissed with her remarks. All I want is some harmony and peace at home. But all I get is naggings, complains, negative remarks coming from her.

The only consolation is my hubby is always on my side and my DD was wiping my tears away as I cried after the episode with MIL.

Apologise for my endless rantings...and thank you for reading.

I wish I could! I need to work a perfect plan. In where I live, the parents can apply with a society to get parental allowance ($) from their children, if they have proof that their children do not want to support them or live with them. Btw, I forgot to add on that my hubby has another brother who lives in another country like 2,400 miles away, separated by the ocean and 6 hours of flight time.

Oh you mean my MIL go live with her other son? I wish she would! She always said she would consider migrating there but it's all empty talk! She doesn't want to live there because she can't speak proper English. Besides, she always says that all her siblings are here...

I wish she would go live with her other son, so her other DIL will know how it feels to be living with the crazy MIL.
