SIL's Drama

I'm sure I've mentioned before that my SIL is a drama queen who is INCREDIBLY jealous that her YOUNGER brother found love and got married before she did (she's 26 and has never had a boyfriend).  She has done all kinds of stupid things to attempt to get attention from her parents (which I find ironic, because they pay us VERY little attention, if any).  She's pulled all kinds of little drama episodes, but this recent one takes the cake.

We heard recently that SIL had "gone home sick for the weekend" (she is a medical intern about 3 hours from her parent's home).  Apparently she'd been whining about "upset stomach, constipation and gas".  Well, she kept whining about it, making her mother drive 3 hours to baby her  when she returned to Cairns.  Well, MIL decided to get serious and have a doctor look into things (funny that SIL couldn't come up with any ideas, being the "smart doctor" that everyone tries to claim she is - even though she couldn't even diagnose when I had the common flu).

The way SIL complained, you'd think she was dying.  The doctor said her symptoms sound like "irritable bowel syndrome", but SIL whined and complained that it was MUCH WORSE than that, and so after her crying fits, her mother made sure an intern was contacted.  SIL ended up scheduled for a colonoscopy (which she made a huge drama about having to go through).  Blood was taken, MRI, and other tests done to rule out Chron's disease and other things.

Finally, after the colonoscopy came back clean (so to speak - and I think SIL was actually upset they still were calling her situation "irritable bowels"), the 2nd opinion doctor said that anything sinister has been ruled out.  Her tract looked fine, but he found a touch of an infection that may have irritated the bowels.  So, she's been put on some meds (strangely enough, the same meds they give people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and just told her to rest and she'd be fine.

SIL is still whining that she thinks it must be more, but naturally she admits there are no other tests that can be done to prove her theory.  She's having her mommy baby her as she "recovers", whining and making a big show of things.  She's eating up all the attention.

I declined the opportunity to send a "get well" message, figuring that if hubby wants to send one from us both, he can (but he's not known for being timely about such things).

I'm glad nothing "sinister" is going on (not that I thought there was any possibility that upset stomach, constipation and gas were really going to amount to too much). I figured she was constipated because she's always got her arse puckered up so tightly that it was holding back the flow of things, so to speak.

I've decided to dub the situation thusly:  My pain in the arse SIL has a pain in the arse.   I always knew she was full of $#!t. Icon_wink

RE: SIL's Drama

I feel sad for your SIL. No one would endure the discomfort and embarrassment of a colonoscopy unless they were really, truly in pain.  My sil has had them done twice, and its a very disconcerting experience. My best friend has also had one- she couldn't be given the anthesia and was awake for the procedure. Egad. Either way, both of them had IBS.

IBS is an incredibly painful disorder (there are large support groups for it). There are some good medicines out there, but most of them take a couple weeks to help. I hope she finds a more sympathetic intern, and that your mil stops referring to her pain as her "Whining". Your MIL is so mean!!! No wonder her youngest child wanted to move to the U.S.!!! No doubt to get away from her!

RE: SIL's Drama

MIL treats all of her children as exactly that: children.  All 3 of them are adults, and yet she does everything in her power to try to stunt their growth and their ascention into adulthood.  I didn't get the impression that SIL wanted the colonoscopy, I got the impression that MIL was so busy babying her that she insisted upon one. SIL was NOT happy about the proceedure at all!  She doesn't actually have IBS, she merely had an infection which had some similar symptoms, but on a much smaller scale.

The girl was passed from doc to doc, because MIL didn't want to believe that it wasn't anything serious (she also tries to get her own daughter attention, and invents new and interesting ways to bring up her daughter in conversations just so people will remember that the SIL is still alive).  So, the MIL has nurtured this behavior in her daughter from a young age to do whatever it takes to get attention and be babied by people.  Since my SIL is still single, and MIL is getting embarrassed by the fact SIL is 26 and has never had a bf, let alone a prospect for a husband, MIL does what she can to impress people with her daughter's achievements (or to worry people with any "illness").

MIL just wants to keep her kids dependant upon her forever. Sadly, SIL and BIL may do just that at this rate.
